Nos Cats On Trees se sont livrés lors d’une interview pour le site 2lives.fr. Bonne lecture !

1/ Pour ceux qui ne vous connaissent pas encore, pouvez-vous vous présenter ?

Nina : oui bien sûr . Donc moi c’est Nina, je suis au piano et au chant et Yohan est à la batterie et au chant aussi. Nous sommes un duo piano-batterie sous forme de pop fantaisiste.

Yohan : nous faisons une pop diverse et variée. On a des morceaux qui se développent dans plusieurs registres, des morceaux un peu sensibles qui se développent toute en nuance comme « Sirens Calls». On dit souvent que la pochette ressemble beaucoup à ce qu’on fait, c’est une ambiance très organique avec des plantes et le fait aussi que nous sommes torses-nus, et puis il y a le côté plus moderne avec les triangles, les couleurs plus vives.

2/ Vous vous êtes rencontrés comment ?

N : on s’est rencontrés à la sortie du lycée. On avait un autre projet musical très différent de celui d’aujourd’hui où on était plus nombreux et c’est plus tard qu’on a décidé de se détacher et se lancer à deux. On s’entendait tellement bien artistiquement que c’était une évidence de rester ensemble.

3/ Racontez-moi l’histoire du nom « Cats On Tres »

Y : il y a plusieurs choses. Le chat est un animal libre, assez sensible, il donne l’impression d’avoir beaucoup de recul sur lui-même et sur ce qui l’entoure, c’est ce qu’on essaie de faire aussi dans ce projet. Et dans ce nom là aussi, il y a un côté rêveur, un clin d’oeil à l’imagination où je voie un peu l’image du chat d’Alice Aux Pays des Merveilles. Je trouve que ça nous définissait bien et on trouvait l’image agréable et efficace.

4/ Votre premier album est sorti en octobre 2013 alors que vous êtes formés depuis 2007. Pourquoi avoir attendu si longtemps ?

N : on a pris le temps de faire plein de choses pendant cinq ans, on a été très productifs. On a fait beaucoup de concerts, beaucoup composés et évolués dans la région. On a pris le temps de s’installer grâce à des acteurs régionaux comme Jerkov Musiques qui s’est intéressé à nous dès le début puis grâce à eux on a fait le Printemps de Bourges qui nous a amené à rencontrer Pierre Rougean puis TOT OU TARD.
Y: en fait on compose énormément ensemble, on avait fait déjà quelques EP mais en fait on n’a pas sélectionné tout ce que l’on a construit ensemble pour le disque final. On a arrangé jusqu’à la dernière minute. Et d’ailleurs « Sirens Calls » c’est un instant, on a essayé plein de directions d’arrangements différents sur tous les morceaux mais parfois l’arrangement final se débloque toujours ensemble en se regardant ou essayant un truc spontané, et « Sirens Calls » c’est tout ça. Donc il n’y a pas tellement de règles mais c’est vrai qu’on a besoin de prendre le temps. Un 1er album c’est super important parce que c’est ce qui résume au-delà des cinq ans qu’on a passé ensemble tout ce qu tu es depuis le début de ta vie donc il faut le temps d’en être satisfait. Il faut le temps de le mûrir, et aujourd’hui on en est très fiers par ce qu’on a pris le temps de la faire comme on voulait le faire. Après on a été aidé pour la réalisation par Jean-Christophe Urbain et Pierre Rougean.

D’ailleurs on a rencontré il y a peu de temps à La Dynamo, Jean-Christophe Urbain qui nous a parlé de vous pendant l’interview, il a pris beaucoup de plaisir à construire cet album avec vous deux.

Y : on a pris beaucoup de plaisir aussi. Ce sont des rencontres humaines passionnantes. Ce sont de belles personnes et au-delà de ça, ils ont des idées superbes en mélodies et structures. C’était vraiment un cercle vertueux de bonnes idées. On a amené la structure et ils ont construits tout le reste. En tout cas, tout ça a fait un album qui nous ressemble et dont on est très fier. C’est un album sincère, qui procure de véritables émotions aux gens.

5/ Votre formation est originale piano/batterie. Pourquoi être à deux ?

cats-on-trees_00N : c’était une volonté de rester à deux parce que finalement il y a une vraie connexion qui se fait entre Yohan et moi, on voulait égoïstement dans cet album là que personne n’interfère dans ce petit cocon qu’on a un peu installé, au-delà de toutes les collaborations que l’on a fait sur l’album. On est bien comme ça, et puis sur scène ce n’est pas parce qu’on est que deux qu’il ne se passe pas grand chose. Au contraire, il y a une grande connexion avec le public et entre nous. C’est très riche émotionnellement. Peut-être que le fait d’être deux peut permettre tout ça.
Y : ça nous offre une liberté d’être deux sur scène. La contrainte crée la force du projet. Au-delà de ça, quelque soit l’instrument il fallait qu’on fasse quelque chose ensemble. On est sur la même longueur d’onde humainement, on connait très bien nos vies puisque nous sommes très amis donc a n’a vraiment pas de mal à écrire texte et musique car ça coule de source, c’est très spontané. On se complète beaucoup, on s’apporte l’un l’autre et la collaboration est essentielle.
C’est tombé piano-batterie parce que ce sont des instruments que l’on a appris de manière classique mais on aurait très bien s’épanouir dans un projet électro avec d’autres moyens. Et c’est marrant car la genèse du projet était plus électro mais c’était au 1er concert il y a un ingénieur lumière qui avait mis des tonnes de lumières, beaucoup trop pour le petit club et du coup il a fait sauté toute l’électricité, il a cassé mon Pad, et du coup j’ai du improviser une partie de batterie le soir même. Et c’est comme ça qu’on a trouvé la forme définitive de Cats On Trees. C’est donc un hasard heureux.
N : je tiens à dire que l’ingé lumière est un ami et que c’est un très très bon ingé lumière !

 

6/ Vous chantez en anglais, qu’est-ce que cette langue apporte dans vos textes ?

N : on adore la langue française, on écoute beaucoup d’artistes français comme Delerm, Bashung et plein d’autres. Mais on a remarqué en France, lorsqu’on écoute une chanson on se focalise sur le texte et peu sur le reste où les arrangements sont souvent secondaires, mais Yohan et moi on est des amoureux de la mélodie et l’anglais est une langue qui chante d’elle-même, qui est très mélodique et qui se fond dans l’arrangement beaucoup plus facilement.
Y : et au-delà de ça on attache beaucoup d’importance à ce qu’on écrit par nos expériences de vies, on a pris vraiment le temps d’écrire nos textes. Et en international il y a a beaucoup d’artistes français qui sont considérés ailleurs. On parle beaucoup des français de Phoenix, Daft Punk qui sont reconnus internationalement, et ça serait chouette qu’on ait la même aura aussi.

7/ Vous êtes nommés aux Victoires de la musique, dans les dix premiers du tremplin W9 plein de belles choses arrivent pour vous en peu de temps. Quel est votre regard face à tout ça ?

N : on est surpris car c’est vrai que depuis que l’album est sorti on a beaucoup de bonnes nouvelles. Mais on sait d’où on vient, on a toujours énormément travaillé avec Yohan.
Y : on est vraiment très surpris tous les deux. Il y a plein de choses dont on rêvait qui nous arrive maintenant.

Il y a aussi une confiance de la part de votre public.

Y : oui, c’est ce que j’allais dire. On a public qui nous suit depuis de nombreuses années et qui grossit tous les jours. On communique beaucoup via les réseaux sociaux de manières directes, on y attache beaucoup d’importance car on attache beaucoup d’importance aux rapports humains. Dés qu’on sort de scène, on s’attache à aller parler aux gens qui nous raconte aussi leurs vies. C’est intéressant car ça nous enrichit beaucoup.
N : c’est inspirant aussi.
Y : par exemple pour W9, on a adoré le fait que les gens puisse voter, qu’on ait un réel soutien de la part de tout le monde en essayant d’investir leurs amis, leurs familles. C’est très touchant.

8/ Votre album raconte des histoires personnelles ?

N : un album est une thérapie. Même s’il a quelque chose d’universel en racontant des histoires assez simples et communes.
Y : quand tu joues tu as besoin de vivre ce que tu joues, ça te porte. Pour bien jouer tu dois bien ressentir les chansons. Ça sert à rien de faire semblant de jouer à quelqu’un que tu n’es pas. Ça nous ressemble pas de faire semblant, et les artistes qui nous touchent en peinture, cinéma ou musique, ce sont des gens qui ont une vraie personnalité, une âme avec des qualités et des défauts, et c’est justement ça qui fait la richesse et la différence par rapport à d’autres artistes. Donc on avait vraiment une volonté de partir de quelque chose de sincère quitte à se mettre un peu à danger en se montrant tel qu’on est vraiment.

9 / Le tournage du clip de « Sirens Calls » s’est déroulé en Bolivie. Comment s’est passé ce tournage ?

N : c’était super ! C’était une vraie aventure, déjà on y est resté plus longtemps que prévu parce que j’ai perdu mes papiers là-bas ! L’endroit du tournage se passait dans le désert de sel, c’est très vaste, très haut, on a l’impression d’être au bout du monde ou sur une autre planète. Ce qui nous a marqué dans le clip, c’est l’image de fin où on avance vers le soleil qui nous paraissait immense et vu que c’est très haut, très plat, on se sentait comme aspiré vers un tunnel. Il y avait quelque chose de mystique et d’assez incroyable lors de ce tournage qu’on oubliera jamais.
Y : c’est vrai que c’était une aventure un peu extrême. Il y a un jour d’adaptation pour respirer car on est trop haut, on ne peut pas monter deux marches sans être fatigués. Il fait très chaud la journée, et le soir par contre il fait très froid avec beaucoup de vent au milieu de rien.
N: physiquement et émotionnellement ce fut un tournage assez riche.

10 / Pour finir, qu’est-ce que l’on peut vous souhaiter pour 2014 ?

N : de continuer à gagner de l’inspiration.
